Tim Lussier in the News: HPU team does well at Island Debate Invitational
From HPU’s “Student Run Paper“ Congratulations to Jake Bradshaw, Cody Corcelius and Tim Lussier from the Sea Warrior Debate Society for taking 2nd place at the HPU hosted Island Debate Invitational intervarsity debate tournament on April 24th. After competing in four preliminary rounds against other three-person teams from HPU, Honolulu Community College, and the University of Hawai’i, Manoa, the trio reached the final round of the tournament to compete against UH. Following a heated debate over U.S. immigration policy, the HPU team narrowly missed the win with a 3-2 decision in favor of UH. Ten students were recognized for their individual performances. Out of 48 students, Cassie Chang was ranked 4th , Lussier 6th, Craig Ursuy 8th and Corcelius 9th. Earlier in the month, the U.S. Universities National Championship was hosted by Regis University on the Denver University campus. A team from Claremont McKenna won the Championship title. HPU sent one team of two: Lussier and Corcelius. They placed 86th out of 124, with a middle-average score, and were only one or two wins away from being in the semi-finals. HPU hosts two tournaments a year, the Island Debate Invitational and the Pan Pacific Championship and several public debates events. Fall debate society practices will be held Tuesday/Thursday 3-5pm.
