What a near perfect Hawai'i Pacific University would look like

Tim Lussier served as a Junior Representative for the Associated Students of Hawai’i Pacific University in 2008. This is an email he sent to his fellow representatives:

What a perfect HPU would look like according to Tim Lussier

Student Government would independent of the college interference
Student Fee to create separate budget
Achievable by lowering tuition $ xx Dollars and then raising student activity fee.
Would be required fee, since lowering tuition would have to come out of somewhere else.
Right now, HPU Administration has final say over all things Student Government does. That is wrong.

Students strong in College Decisions
Students may not always have something to say, but collaboration is key. Invite students into college committees, their opinions can be valuable, and they can report to AS-HPU what the college is doing.
Students at Clackamas Community College served on *All* College Committees and hiring committees for most deans, and all Vice President and Presidents of the college.

Strong Student Government
Support Student involvement in Student Government
Competition Breeds Excellence, Let Students Compete/Run for Election to achieve spots.
Reward Students with scholarships/book stipend/money
Clackamas Community College gave tuition wavers to students.
Only one election position this year was competitive
Student Newspaper would be Strong, Independent
Advisor’s job should be to only advise, now he censors and prints only “positive material” (Dr. LeDoux’s words)
Chaminade’s Advisor told me he doesn’t censor, its only student writing
College would have deal with being criticized by a student newspaper.
Tim would happily write articles for them, but not if they will censor my articles based on CONENT (not edit ability) due to College not wanting negative material.
Should be a journalistic (Dr. LeDoux said not all newspapers are done by journalists), our is a community paper.
Newspapers don’t run press releases from College (See UH’s, Chaminades or BYU-H’s Newspapers)
Should not be called a “Student Newspaper” if more than half of the articles aren’t from students.
Newspaper should rarely run stories from non students/magazines
Newspaper shouldn’t run many stories from college staff

What a perfect AS-HPU would look like according to Tim Lussier
We would have defined mission of serving the students through representing them to the college administration.
We would be demanding accountability from college leadership.
We would be tireless advocates for improvements to the college.
We would work on student committees, college committees to communicate our message and the student voice to those that need to hear it.
We would focus on representation rather than recreation.

Our elections would be competitive, producing the best results for students and the best candidates

What our office would look like:
The AS-HPU office would be staffed by students during operating hours
AS-HPU would sell snacks, candy bars from Costco at Cost.
                                    This would draw students in
AS-HPU would run a “Book Exchange”
We would hold books, students could set their own price and sell to other students.
                        The office would be redesigned:
Without the clunky desks on the wall towards fort st.
The boxes of stuff would be put away in storage.
The office would have computers for AS-HPU members to work.

… Should there be a law against a company that sells a product that is deemed addictive?

WASHINGTON—There’s nothing neutral in the battle between AT&T Inc. and Google Inc. over the future of the Internet.

Google, the powerhouse of Silicon Valley, and AT&T, champion for the old-line phone industry, are marshaling political allies, lobbyists and—in AT&T’s case—labor unions for a fight over proposed “net neutrality” rules that could affect tens of billions of dollars in investments needed to upgrade the U.S. broadband network, which lags in speed and affordability compared with some countries.

On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission made good on its promise to push new rules that would require Internet providers such as AT&T to deliver Web traffic without delay.

There’s three things what everyone needs to know. One, you got to want to know what you don’t know. Two, you have to feel comfortable being uncomfortable. And three, you always need the mind-set of a beginner in wanting to learn.
